From Relief to Recovery — Why Distribution Alone Is Not Enough

From Relief to Recovery — Why Distribution Alone Is Not Enough

In emergencies, immediate assistance may be the first priority. By nature, however, relief responds to urgent needs, while communities often require a longer process to restore stability and the ability to shape their own future.

Recovery begins when a response moves beyond meeting immediate needs and also strengthens the capacity of people and local institutions to rebuild everyday life. Education, psychosocial support, community participation, rehabilitation and skills development can all contribute to this process.

This does not make relief less important. It places relief within a wider pathway. A distribution may meet today's need; recovery also asks what a community needs to regain agency tomorrow.

That is why we use a simple phrase to describe our approach: recovery begins with people.
