Returning to a Half-Standing Home — What Recovery Means for Returning Families

Returning to a place of origin can be a major step, but it is not the end of recovery. A family may return to a damaged home, a neighbourhood where services have changed, or a community where schools and public spaces still need time and investment to regain their role.

That is why we do not reduce recovery to repairing buildings alone. Safe shelter matters, but it is connected to access to education, services, community support, and the ability to rebuild everyday life.

Community recovery looks at these elements together. When schools, community spaces, and essential services improve, families have a stronger foundation for stability and for participating in the rebuilding of their surroundings.

The aim is not simply to return a place to what it was, but to support communities in shaping a safer and more resilient future.
